Forgotten Entities
Forgotten Entities (detail), 2019, Embroidery on canvas (the reverse side), 96 X 90 cm.
In the work Forgotten Entities (2019), I examined the extent to which I might approach the quality of drawing through embroidery; the aim was to utilize thread as a drawing medium with the capacity to define and animate forms. To that end, a range of experimentations have been undertaken with thread to uncover new potential for this traditional craft medium in my work. It is worth adding that, whilst I was surrounded by textile and embroidery everywhere in my domestic environment growing up, prior to my Master’s program, I had not worked with this medium. The drawbacks of being untrained, in some regards, were compensated for by the ‘merit’ of not feeling compelled to conform to expectations of the medium. Inspired by a passing comment, I recognised that the reverse of the embroidery came closer to my intention as the unselfconscious direction of the threads which are randomly tied and released approaches the spontaneity of drawing.
With Forgotten Entities, my attempt was to create a view of an archaic environment that was once colourful and teeming with life but has since become monochrome. I intended to elevate the forgotten biota through embroidery, a revered craft in Kerman and one which has been used to overcome environmental deprivations by summoning aesthetic and biological abundance.
