Trace

Trace (detail), 2019, Watercolour and embroidery on canvas, 210 X 40 cm.

After revisiting the Kerman palaeontology museum on a journey back to my hometown in 2019, I examined ways in which the visual quality of the imprinted species might be evoked through embroidery. The work Trace (2019) was created out of a playful experimentation with the material—randomly shaping threads on the fabric and, when a desirable form was attained, embroidering the patterns within the body of each creature. Being aesthetically attracted to the fossils and the story behind the demise of species, Trace is my attempt to suggest the process of physical transformation from living to abiotic material—I trace the marks and trails the ancient lives have left behind using a medium that aligns with Kerman’s traditional crafts.
